Goodyear to close Fayettville

Tire Business reports that Goodyear plans to shut down its tire plant in Fayetteville, NC by the end of 2027, a decision that will idle more than 2,000 workers. Details of the closure are still under negotiation with union officials. The plant opened in 1969 and has a capacity of 40,000 units per day of passenger car and light truck tires, according to TB data. Last year, Goodyear announced plans to transition the Danville, VA plant from commercial truck tires to the mixing and production of aviation products, a move that removed some 850 jobs, or about 40% of the site's workforce.

As Tire Business noted in its article, the closure follows a wave of similar announcements for the US tire industry. Others recent tire plant closures or planned closures include Bridgestone Americas at La Vergne, TN in July 2025; Yokohama Tire at Salem, VA in March 2026; Yokohama Trelleborg Wheel Systems in Spartanburg, SC in early 2025; Michelin in Ardmore, OK in October 2025; Sumitomo Rubber Industries in Tonawanda, NY in November 2024; and Titan International in Jackson, TN, scheduled for October 2026. Challenging times indeed.
