Green Tire Systems (Jersey City, New Jersey) has plans to start a tire recycling operation in the site of a former Union Carbide plant in Niagara Falls, New York, though a previous attempt at the same project failed.
The Buffalo News has the details.
Managing Director Benjamin Plum said Green Tire has a “patented, very advanced technology” that will enable the company to turn old tires into fuel oil, carbon black, steel and liquefied gas with a minimum of environmental problems. Plum admitted that pyrolysis, as the technique is known, “has a very bad reputation and a history of failure in the United States.” But he said Green Tire’s new method is being used in its plants in China and Taiwan. “I am confident that we will pass with flying colors all EPA and DEC requirements,” Plum said.
